Fertilome Tree and Shrub Systemic Insect Drench 16 fl. oz. Imidacloprid

This is for a 16 fl. oz. Bottle of liquid systemic insecticide.  The active ingredient is imidacloprid listed at 1.47%.  The listed use of this product is for insects that attack trees and shrubs.  It is diluted and poured into the soil around the affected trees and/or shrubs.

Many African violet hobby growers find that if they dilute this product even more than the label specifies that it can be successfully used on their houseplants as a foliage spray and as a soil drench.  Success is reported against foliar mealybug, soft scale, aphids, white flies, fungus gnats, and blossom thrips using the dilution as a spray.  As a drench growers report good results against springtails, fungus gnat larvae, and soil (Pritchard) mealybug.  The product kills and contact and is absorbed into the plants system and continues to protect for up to 30 days.  Pesticides are assigned a class designation ranging from 1 to 4 with 1 being more dangerous and 4 being safer.  Imidacloprid has a class 3 designation.  It has little, if any, odor.  It is toxic to honeybees and to fish.  If you have pet birds they should be moved out of the room where it will be used until after the sprayed dilution has completely dried on the plant.  Observe all precautions on the label.

Whether you wish to use this product as a spray or as a drench the dilution is the same.  Per 8 oz of warm water use 3/8 teaspoons, per 16 oz. of warm water use 3/4 teaspoon.  To 1 gallon of warm water add 6 teaspoons (2 Tablespoons).

Please see an informative article about the use of imidacloprid on African violets in the September – October 2011 African Violet Magazine pp. 12 - 13.

Scrap pieces of egg crate diffuser  - This styrene plastic grid-like material is called egg crate diffuser.  Since it is rigid and waterproof it lends itself to several uses with houseplants:  (1) You can use it to replace the pebbles in your pebble trays, lining your trays with them rather than with pebbles.  The grid is easier to clean as you can safely put it through the dishwasher. (2) If you grow using capillary matting you can place these “grid” pieces under your capillary matting so that you increase the time interval between waterings.   Use these pieces of grid to line your trays. Place your matting on top of the grid and wrap the matting around under the grid for an inch or two being sure the mat touches the bottom of your tray.    Want more water under the plants so you don’t have to fill the trays as often?  Just use a double or triple layer of the grid pieces.  Fill to just below the upper surface of the upper most layer of grid so that your pots aren’t sitting in water.  Great for increasing humidity.    This  is a set of  8 pieces of egg crate diffuser.  Each piece is 3/8 inch thick and measures 5 ½ inches wide by 23 ½ inches long.  It can be cut to fit  your trays with a hand-held saber saw (electric jig saw) or by hand with long nose pliers snapping off the segments one by one.  Wear eye protection when cutting it.  Styrene plastic is sharp.
